A team of doctors from Cambridge's Addenbrooke Hospital believe that they have found a cure for peanut allergies. They exposed a group of four children to peanuts over a six-month period and gradually built up their tolerance. By the end of the study the children were eating about five peanuts a day.
Scientists have desensitised people from pollen and wasp allergies but this is the first time they have been successful in doing this with a food allergy. More follow-up is required to confirm the results of this study.
The research team gave the children tiny 5mg doses of peanut flour every day before they started introducing 800mg, which is the equivalent to five whole peanuts.
The scientists said that this is not a permanent cure, but if the children keep taking a daily dose of peanuts this will help them maintain their tolerance. The researchers have expanded the study to include 18 more children. They believe that this could also work for adults.
Scientists are Closer to a Cure for Peanut Allergies
Healthy Moms Dictionary - Bipolar Disorder
What is bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness is a mental illness in which the patient cycles through uncontrollable moods. This illness is not as common as clinical depression. People diagnosed as bipolar go through cycles of depression, hypo mania or elevated mood, mania or extremely elevated mood, and in some cases psychosis. These mood changes can be dramatic and rapid but in most cases they are gradual. Mania and depression can affect thinking, judgment and social behavior in ways that cause serious problems.
If you believe that you or a loved one may have bipolar disorder here are some symptoms to look for. Symptoms of a manic episode include:
- Increased energy, activity, and restlessness
- Excessively “high,” overly good, euphoric mood
- Extreme irritability
- Racing thoughts and talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another
- Lack of concentration
- Little sleep needed
- Unrealistic beliefs in one’s abilities and powers
- Poor judgment
- Spending sprees
- A lasting period of behavior that is different from usual
- Increased sexual drive
- Abuse of drugs, particularly cocaine, alcohol, and sleeping medications
- Provocative, intrusive, or aggressive behavior
- Denial that anything is wrong
- Lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood
- Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, including sex
- Decreased energy, a feeling of fatigue or of being “slowed down”
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
- Restlessness or irritability
- Sleeping too much, or can’t sleep
- Change in appetite and/or unintended weight loss or gain
- Chronic pain or other persistent bodily symptoms that are not caused by physical illness or injury
- Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
Bipolar disorder is less common among children. Although, more and more doctors are diagnosing kids with the illness at a very young age. According to Wikipedia, "Onset prior to age 10 has been found in an estimated 0.3% to 0.5% of bipolar patients, although some case reviews suggest higher figures. Nevertheless, findings indicate that the number of American children and adolescents treated for bipolar disorder increased 40-fold from 1994 to 2003, and continues to increase. The data suggest that doctors had been more aggressively applying the diagnosis to children, rather than that the incidence of the disorder has increased. The study calculated the number of psychiatric visits increased from 20,000 in 1994 to 800,000 in 2003, or 1% of the population under age 20."
Research has proven that more women suffer from depression than men. Women with bipolar disorder tend to have bipolar 2 which means that they don't have sever mania like men with the disorder do. Women with bipolar who wish to get pregnant should consult with their psychiatrist first.
Bipolar Disorder Treatment
Bipolar disorder is usually treated with medications and psychotherapy. Common bipolar medications include: lithium, anti convulsants, and anti psychotics. Lithium helps relieve the severity of manic episodes and may also help with depression. Anti convulsant medications have been proven to help stabilize mania in bipolar disorder. Anti psychotic medication is usually used in the short term to control psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. Other commonly prescribed medication to treat bipolar disorder are: calcium channel blockers, benzodiazepines and antidepressants.

Clear Up Your Child's Ear Infection With the EarDoc
The Ear Doc is a revolutionary new tool that stops ear pain and helps relieve swimmers ear, ear infections and fluids in the ear. This is tool will open up the ear tube for about 75% of children up to the age of seven as well as adults, divers, and air travelers that suffer from ear pain.
All you do is put the Ear Doc behind your child's ear and turn it on. It will vibrate and relieve ear pain. These vibration waves travel through to the bone to the middle ear and open the Eustachian tube. The waves drain the trapped fluids and ease the pressure.
All this sounds great! With the Ear Doc you don't have to get medications or expensive surgeries to take care of ear problems. I was able to try this out for myself. When we got the Ear Doc in the mail my husband took it out and tried it out on his sore ear. Afterward, he told me that the vibration made his ear hurt even more. We took it out once more to try it again and the Ear Doc fell apart.
All of the promises that this company says this instrument can perform sound great but it needs some major improvements. For one thing, it is light weight and made of cheap plastic. The Ear Doc takes two double A batteries which are not included. This tool is so flimsy that it wouldn't take much to break it. All we did was put the batteries back in because they fell out and the darn thing fell apart. I was very disappointed.
If you child suffers from frequent ear infections please visit their website to read other testimonies and reviews before you decide to purchase the Ear Doc.
Healthy Moms Dictionary - Hives
Hives or Urticaria is a rash on the skin that is commonly caused by an allergic reaction. The skin is raised, and itchy and can be rounded or flat topped but it always elevated above the surrounding skin.
Hives can also be caused by an allergic trigger. If the hives last longer than six weeks most likely it is not due to an allergy. Hives are usually itchy but they can also burn or sting. They vary in size and can be found anywhere on the skin, including the face, lips tongue or throat. These itchy spots, may join together to form larger areas known as plaques and can last for hours or several days before fading.
According to WebMD, "Hives and angioedema form when, in response to histamine, blood plasma leaks out of small blood vessels in the skin. Histamine is a chemical released from specialized cells along the skin's blood vessels."

Snap out of Unhealthy Eating Habits for Good
I found this surprising information in Self Magazine's March 2009 Issue. We are constantly hearing about different ways to lose weight, but losing weight while taking photos? I just thought I would share this all with you.
Snap out of Unhealthy Eating Habits for Good
By Merrit Watts
Self Magazine March, 2009
"Being a shutterbug could benefit your waistline. When people took pictures of everything they ate for five days they reported consuming fewer snacks and being less likely to go back for seconds than during a week-long period in which they kept a written food diary, a study from the University of Wisconsin at Madison finds. Try it yourself. Photograph everything you eat for a day or simply one meal such as dinner for a week. (Get tips from a pro at Self.com/fooddiet/blogs/eatlikeme.) Examine your photos for super sized portions and color variety; you may spot a death of leafy greens or a surplus of white carbs. (Playing paparazzo can also highlight too-frequent snack breaks.) To shoot with subtlety, use a camera phone. But don't get obsessive. Taking pics can help you make tweaks, but there's no such thing as a picture-perfect diet."
Healthy Moms Dictionary - Allergies
Outdoor allergies, also sometimes referred to as seasonal allergic rhinitis, or hay fever can occur when allergens that are commonly found outdoors such as pollen, grass, and mold spores are inhaled into the nose and the lungs causing allergic reactions. Pollen and mold are the most common triggers for outdoor allergies.
How Allergies Effect Children
An allergic reaction is the body's immune system response to certain elements in the environment. Children with allergies tend to react to certain substances that may not cause reactions to other children.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, approximately 20 percent of Americans, one in every five adults and children, have allergies which includes allergic asthma. About 80 percent of children with asthma have allergies and food allergies occur in 8 percent of children younger than age six.
Children are usually more vulnerable to allergies than adults. Food, dust mites, animal dander and pollen are the most common childhood allergies. These substances can cause the child to have rhinitis, asthma and eczema.Genetics and Allergies
A child has a 75 percent chance of having allergies if both parents have allergies and only a 50 percent chance if only one parent suffers from allergies.
Allergy Symptoms
When the body releases special antibodies called immunoglobin E, symptoms of an allergic reaction occur. These antibodies trigger the release of chemicals hat can cause the physical symptoms and changes associated with allergies. These include:
Hives
Runny nose
Itching or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
Upset stomach, cramps, bloating or diarrhea
Wheezing or difficulty breathing
Anaphylactic shock - a life threatening body reaction which requires emergency care
If you believe that you or your child is suffering from allergies your doctor can do an allergy test to find out what is causing the allergic reaction.
Skin prick tests are the most common form done to test for allergies. The doctor will introduce small amounts of allergy triggers through the skin of the arm or back by pricking or puncturing the skin wiht a needle or similar device. If the patient is allergic to a substance a raised red itchy bump will appear. These reactions usually appear within 15 minutes. The size of the bump is important. The bigger it is the more sensitive the patient is to that particular substance. Your doctor may advise that you discontinue certain medications, especially antihistamines for several days prior to testing.
Your doctor, or allergist may choose to perform a blood test to check for allergies. This is usually performed if the patient has a skin rash which will make it difficult to see the reaction to the skin prick.
Treatment Options for Allergies
The most common form of treatment for allergies are over the counter and prescription drugs. Antihistamines are a broad class of drugs that block the inflammatory effects of histamine. These drugs prevent histamine from interacting with the cells which causes inflammation. Common over the counter antihistamines include: Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton. Although, these may cause drowsiness.
Other alternatives which may not cause drowsiness are also available over the counter and by prescription. These include, Allegra, Claritin, Alavert and Zyrtec. You can also get these antihitamines with an added decongestant. Do not combine these medications or mix with alcohol. Also avoid opperating heavy machinery while taking these medications.

Healthy Moms Dictionary - Trichotillomania (Hair Pulling Disorder)
Trichotillomania (trik-o-til-o-MAY-ne-uh) is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Pulling hair out of the scalp leaves patchy bald spots.
Hair is associated with beauty so trichotillomania can be very emotionally painful for people with the disorder.
Trichotillomania may be mild for some and usually manageable. The urge to pull hair for others can be overwhelming. Some treatment options have helped many people reduce their hair pulling or stop all together.
Help For Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a relatively new disorder and wasn't recognized until the late 1980's. However, help is available for people with the disorder.
How to Treat Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania can be treated in two different ways. It can be treated through Psychotherapy and medications. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been proven to be an effective treatment for trichotillomania. This therapy teaches the patient how to be more aware of the hair pulling and learn how to reverse the habit. The psychologist will also point out what emotions and triggers are involved in hair pulling and how to substitute other behaviors instead.
Trichotillomania can also be treated with medications. Antidepressants are commonly used to treat the disorder, however, they are not effective unless combined with cognitive behavior therapy.
Tricotillomania and Autism
Trichotillomania is also an obsessive compulsive disorder and can be a common disorder among autistic children. More children are diagnosed with the hair pulling disorder than adults.
If you believe that you or your child has trichotillomania discuss your symptoms with your doctor right away.
