How to Create a Fishtail Braid

We might have all outgrown the braided pigtails our mothers made us wear in grade school, but that doesn't mean you can't update the look with some sleek sophistication. This look is perfect on those not-so-perfect hair days, as well as for a jaunt to the gym or an evening out with friends.

Part your hair down the middle of your head and continue this straight line all the way down the back to your neck. Hold the right section in your right hand and the left section in your left. Let go of one section just long enough to grab a small tuft of hair (about the width of your pinkie finger), preferably from the outermost part of the larger section, and cross it over the other section, grabbing it with the respective hand. Then, grab the dropped section again, and let go with your other hand. Repeat the process again with this hand, and cross the small section over to the other side. Keep switching back and forth, repeating the process until you have fully braided the hair. Secure the look with a tight elastic band, and spray with hairspray to finish it off. There are many variations on this style that you can play with as well.

If you're going for a more funky, messy look, pull away a section from the top of your head and pin it up while you braid. After you've finished, loosely curl the top section and let it fall over the braid. You can also pull at the sides of the braid once you have finished to give it a more carefree look. And leaving some bulk at the top and starting a low braid can elevate this style to look more grownup. You're never too old for a braid!
