How to Apply Hot Oil Treatment at Home

Sometimes your dry, damaged hair needs a little more than the basic TLC. If you've tried your share of moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and leave-ins with no avail, you might have to break out the big guns and try an intensive hot oil treatment.

Salons often employ this technique for the most damaged of tresses, but they also charge an arm and a leg for their services. You can also purchase ready-made oil treatments for more modest price at your local drugstore. However, you can turn this project into a low-cost do-it-yourselfer by making the formula at home. It's easier than you might think, and you won't have to peddle away your life savings to get the luscious, healthy hair you deserve.

All you'll need is some cold pressed olive oil, honey, lavender essential oil, vitamin E oil, geranium essential oil, sandalwood essential oil, and a shower cap. In a resealable plastic sandwich bag, mix two thirds of a cup of the olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, two teaspoons vitamin E oil (for an easy way to obtain this ingredient, simply purchase some pills, prick them with a safety pin, and squeeze the inner gel out), and ten drops of each of the remaining essential oils. Knead the bag together to thoroughly mix the ingredients evenly.

Then, soak the bag in a bowl of hot water until it becomes warm throughout. With your fingers, apply the hot oil treatment to your hair, beginning with the roots and working it through to the end. Once the treatment has been applied, slip on a shower cap, curl up with a good book, and let the mixture work its way through for about fifteen to twenty minutes. Rinse the treatment out with shampoo and perform your usual in-shower routine, including conditioning your hair. Style as usual, and adore your transformed locks.
