Fat Loss Foods & Negative Calories

The concept of consuming deficit calories is an intriguing option when talking about fat loss foods.

There are no true negative calorie foods as everything has at least a few calories so the name “negative calorie” stems from something else.

Basically, a weight loss food which has so few calories that it takes the body more energy to digest it than what is consumed is considered negative calorie.

Primarily, fruits and vegetables fall under the category of negative calorie food that are very beneficial to lose weight. You may include blackberries, peaches, lemons, plums, cantaloupe, guava, raspberries, grapefruit and various other healthy fruits.

Some of the negative calorie vegetables are : spinach, tomatoes, peppers, celery, broccoli, asparagus, cabbage and lettuce.

Let’s Look At The Nutritional Information Of Grapefruit:

* An average sized grapefruit has 74 Calories.

* No fat or sodium.

* High in Vitamin C & Potassium.

* Contains 15 Grams of Pectin (a fiber linked with lowering cholesterol and fat)

* Potassium has many important jobs, including helping to regulate blood pressure, helping to keep the right balance of water in fat and muscle tissues, and helping to ensure the proper functioning of cells. Classic symptoms of potassium deficiency include fatigue, mood changes, irregular heartbeat and muscle weakness.

Grapefruit helps dissolve fat and cholesterol and is recommended for any diet food list.

3) Bicycling: depending on the resistance (hills and trails) you can burn hundreds of calories and strengthen your lower body & cardiovascular endurance.

The cardio levels are high while building stamina and leg strength. You can expect to lose 300 calories every 30 minutes with a hard played game. Take a few lessons and check it out, you’ll love the action this sport provides.

10) Rowing: A great cardio exercise and gives your arms an incredible workout. A 145 LB person can burn about 300 calories in 30 minutes. Rowing machines are available in most gyms and are worth a try to get a good feel for this machine.

While there are other exercises to lose weight I chose these because of their diversity. They all hit different parts of the body and provide an excellent way to burn calories. Whatever your desire the main idea is to get moving doing something you enjoy that gets your heart rate elevated.

  1. For Your Heart- Asparagus has the B vitamin folate homocysteine, an amino acid that is believed to decrease inflammation which can cause heart disease. 8 spears of asparagus will give you 20 % of your folate requirement.
  2. Purple Grape Juice-has a powerful antioxidant that decreases heart damaging free radicals. I haven’t tried this mix of equal parts grape juice and seltzer but it’s recommended for cutting calories and guarding arteries.
  3. For Muscles & Joints-Ricotta Cheese is loaded with body building amino acids and made with the whey left behind from the cheese making process. A great breakfast would consist of low fat ricotta cheese in scrambled eggs with salsa, and broccoli sprouts mixed in.
  4. Extra Virgin Olive Oil-contains an anti-inflammatory that is supposed to work like Ibuprofen. This oil is great for a healthy salad dressing when mixed with balsamic vinegar.
  5. For Your Bones-Canned Salmon has Omega 3s that help with bone density and adds calcium to your diet. Instead of ground beef make your next hamburger patty out of salmon with 1/4 cup breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup of chopped onion & 1/2 tablespoon of cumin powder.
  6. Believe it or not Chocolate consumed at one ounce per day maximum is high in magnesium which helps build bone mineral density. Yay!
  7. For Your Skin-Tomatoes have carotenoid lycopene which absorbs into the skin limiting UV damage from the sun and fights against skin cancer and wrinkles.
  8. Hemp Seeds helps your skin retain moisture from the omega 3 fatty acids it contains. You can make a pesto sauce with a tbsp each of lemon juice, pine nuts, shelled hemp seeds, chopped garlic clove, pinch of salt & 1/2 cup of fresh basil.
  9. For Your Hair-Low Fat Cottage Cheese helps hair growth and strength (hair is mostly made up of protein). Cottage cheese has 14 grams of protein in 1/2 cup.
  10. Pumpkin Seeds contain zinc which reduces hair shedding. Throw a tablespoon of seeds into your soup or cereal.
  11. Brain Power food-Arctic Char (cold water fish) Is known for it’s high source of omega-3 fatty acids & improves brain function. It also stimulates feel good neurotransmitters and reduces inflammation.
  12. Kale is another brain power food that decrease brain decline by 40%. 2 servings minimum a day of veggies maximizes brain health.

These 12 Power Foods are not only a healthy way to maintain your immune system and body parts but will also keep your energy levels high and of course burn the fat on a regular basis.

Here’s a great read called “Fat To Fit” that contains the whole package when it comes to fitness and weight loss.

Until next time be consistent and don’t forget “nothing happens overnight” your body will not change without your help.

Fish: A Very Good Protein Food You Need For Optimal Health

Research on the benefits of fish has been extensive for many years. The omega 3 fatty acids help with our brain function and prevent cardiovascular disease. While a fish oil supplement is a worthy replacement, no supplement can match eating a good protein food like fresh fish.

Fish has no carbohydrates and is low in fat and calories while being very high in protein. baked or broiled (never fried) fish is the paramount natural protein food for anyone wanting to lose weight and build muscle depending on what kind of direction you want to go in.

Fish is considered a good protein food that contain generous amounts of omega 3 fatty acids are higher in fat like sardines, mackerel, salmon and halibut. Lean fish like mahimahi, tuna and orange roughy have almost no omega 3s.

The Secret Tips For Losing Weight

Most tips for losing weight include what exercises to perform or what to eat. What about working on your mind to convince yourself that your weight loss goal has already been achieved before you even begin.

‘The Secret’ if you haven’t heard of it yet teaches you to how think this way and communicate your thoughts to the universe. {if you already follow ‘The Secret’ then GOOD ON YA!}

Positive thinking is no secret on how to achieve your goals but having the medium to do it helps greatly because there are times when we as humans sink to a lower thought process and we’re caught swimming in a negative pool of stuff that happened yesterday or years ago, incidents and predicaments we can no longer control!

Losing weight takes positive thinking and discipline. If you picture yourself already thin and fit there is no turning back because success is inevitable. Don’t expect a huge transformation in 2 weeks, your mind wants to change but your body will take some time to get out of it’s comfort level.

Here’s an excerpt form “The Secret Daily Teachings” by Rhonda Byrne the author and Producer of “The Secret” movie . I’ve watched it several times and read her “Daily Teachings” book which is a great motivational tool.

I know you will get inspired as well and that’s gratifying for me. Gratitude is one of the main focuses of “The Secret” and it’s fulfilling to thank people instead of fighting them or things that happen that you know are out of your control.

From: The Secret “Daily Teachings”

“Negative thoughts are not who you are. Your true nature is all good. So if by chance a negative thought comes, say to yourself, these thoughts are not mine and they do not belong with me. I am all good and only have good thoughts for myself and everyone.

Now you are speaking the truth”

Following ‘The Secret’ is one of my favorite tips for losing weight because it works and all it takes is your decision to change the way you think. Tell yourself RIGHT NOW

I am (fill in the blank___ ) lbs thinner and look great! keep thinking that way every day and your wish will come true.

Visualization is a powerful tool to help you reach your goals
All you need to do is make the decision to get started!

Try These Low Cost Weight Loss Tips?

Exercise has many benefits as we all know but there are also some monetary benefits as well. It’s easy to implement a low cost comprehensive exercise plan that will kick you into shape and save you money.

You can save thousands of dollars staying away from the medical system since working out boosts our immune system and keeps sickness at bay. Research has proven this fact and it really doesn’t take a lot of time and money to stay in shape.

Besides increasing your quality of sleep exercise increases mental alertness, fatigue leading to bounds of extra energy and productivity which equals a steady income.

A comprehensive exercise program consists of two components; aerobic and anaerobic. They work together to give you all the benefits you can derive from an exercise program.

1. Aerobic exercise refers to exercises like brisk walking, jogging, swimming, aerobic dance, outdoor cycling, stationary cycling, rowing, stair climbing, etc. The benefits of aerobic exercise are numerous including increased caloric expenditure, increased metabolism, increased energy levels, decreased incidence of cardiovascular disease, etc.

Which exercises can you do at literally no (or very little) cost to you? Let us count the ways:

  1. Brisk walking
  2. Stationary cycling
  3. Aerobic dance
  4. Swimming
  5. Outdoor cycling
  6. Rowing
  7. Stair climbing

The benefits of any kind of movement like the activities above means an improvement with your cardiovascular health, stamina, higher metabolism and burned calories.

So mix in a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables along with lean meat and water(before and after you eat) you have an easy way to health and freedom. Plant foods are so natural they digest easily throughout our bodies.

Us humans did not come with huge incisors like a Bengal Tiger to rip it’s meal to shreds. Predators have a very short intestine for fast digestion which is required when eating nothing but red meat. Think about it and try a 70% meal plan of fresh fruits and veggies of you choice. You will feel light as a feather with more vigor and the desire to do more!

Yummy polvoron

his is what I am munching right now. My favorite polvoron specifically cashew from Goldilocks. It was a pasalubong from Philippines. Thanks. Wish we have Goldilocks here pero Red Ribbon lang. Sometimes I see some at the Filipino store but it does not look good anymore. It's almost lunchtime but i guess this will be more than enough for lunch. I am not sharing it, 'ala namang pinoy at my job. They don't what I'm eating. I'm not in the mood to explain (bad!). No,not today. TGIF.Enjoy!

Elton John's Ice Cream Flavor

In honor of Elton John, Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream has created a new flavor just for him – “Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road”. This is in anticipation of Elton John’s first ever concert in Vermont on July 21. Vermont is the home of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. This limited Elton John flavor is made of “outrageous symphony of decadent chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cookie dough, butter brickle and white chocolate chunks.” It will only be available of Ben & Jerry’s Vermont Scoop Shops from July 18-25 and of course at the concert which will be at Green Mountain State’s Champlain Valley Expo Center. Proceeds from the sale of the ice cream will go to Elton John’s AIDS Foundation.

Ang Cornedbeef

Back home, Purefoods is my favorite corned beef pero pag sa pilipinas mo binili may kamahalan. Tuwing may umuuwi sa philippines and they ask me what pasalubong i like i always say purefoods corned beef. I don't know for some reason we can not find any here, even on ebay (ganyan ko sya ka-miss). So we always settled for Palm corned beef which is ok too and malaman. Then one day, hubby saw in one of the Korean stores here Purefood pero may Martin sa taas..aha, sabi ko trying to mislead but we tried it. You know what, in fairness masarap sya, close to Palm too at mas cheaper. That's a tip for mommies out there. Last weekend, for the first time, we saw two (yes, just TWO!) cans of the original purefoods corned beef at the same store and i was really happy. Hinalungkat ko buong shelf baka meron pa pero talagang dalawa lang. So we ended up buying 2 martin purefoods and 2 original purefoods. Hope they will sell Purefoods regularly now. Iba talaga ang lasa ng Purefoods. Yummy. especially for breakfast.

The Great American Seafood Cookoff

Who would not want to go to New Orleans for free just by voting which is the best recipe? I just joined a contest brought to you by the Great American Seafood Cook off 2008 where you can participate in voting which of the top 5 finalists in your opinion is the best. They are asking for the people's choice this time. There is no gimmick, no purchase to join, it's free. Just cast your vote and if you are lucky that day and get picked, you will win a package trip to New Orleans which includes two Southwest Airline roundtrip tickets, hotel accommodations, dining experience and more. Probably they will let you taste the recipe you voted.

I voted for this recipe by Chef Tafari Campbell of Maryland called Pan Roasted Glazed Rockfish with Peas and Carrots. I like this recipe because it has the best three of my favorite seafood. I can do it with rockfish and shrimp or roackfish and crabs or maybe a combination of the three. And also, the preparation is so easy and I think I can do it myself. The only thing that I would revise if I do this myself is the thyme. I still have to get use to it's taste and if I don't have the shock top beer maybe i could experiment any beer i could get at my local supermarket.

This
cook off is really great because it encourage chefs to utilize their own homegrown domestic ingredients creating a fresh, healthy, sustainable great american seafood. So to all bloggers who loves to cook or those who would like to visit New Orleans, here is your chance. Just go to GreatAmericanSeafoodCookOff.com and cast your vote, pick the best recipe that you think is the number among the 5 finalists. That's all you have to do but do not forget to register you name. Good Luck and i hope one of us will be the lucky winner. Do not forget to share your great experience in New Orleans.

Dried Mangoes

Dried mango is one of my favorite food or sweets. The good ones are those coming from Cebu. When I was still in the Philippines I like it but I really don’t but it as much because I think it was quite expensive for me. I am just happy that Costco carries this dried mangoes – Philippine brand pa. For a big pack like this, I think it is reasonably priced too. Yummy. Yummy, yummy.

Dinner at Olive Garden

We just got home after a birthday dinner at Olive Garden. Not mine but K's birthday. Olive Garden is one of our favorite restaurants. I ordered Chicken Alfredo pizza while hubby had Chicken and Shrimp Carbonara. It was so good not to mention the never ending garden salad with the perfect dressing and the bread. I don't have my camera (broken!) so I can not share any pictures. We have a lot of leftovers we took home and a lot of breadsticks too! That is good for my coffee tomorrow.

Pandesal and Kutsinta

I was so delighted Sunday morning when my friend T came by with pandesal and kutsinta from Philippine bread house in jersey city. Kutsinta is a rice cake made of rice flour, brown sugar and lye while pandesal is filipino bread usually eaten during breakfast. philippine bread house makes the best pandesal. you have to be at their store so early to get the fresh oven baked yummy pandesal. no kidding. BE EARLY! there is usually a line but my friend even if we live more than 15 miles away she goes there every week because of the pandesal. I normally put some in the freezer for future use. the kutsinta is good too. i was drinking my coffee when she came - perfect combination. you know what i miss too in the philippines....pandesal with anchor butter melting on it!!!

Pre-Valentine Lunch

I just came from lunch with my family at Charlie Brown. Hubby is off today so it was his turn to bring and pick up our daughter from school. When it is his turn, I have to prepare everything - socks, boots, pants, shirt and undershirt the night before so that all he has to do in the morning is to change and feed her. No ponytails for my daughter because her dad does not know how to do it so I just told him to just comb her hair nice. So back to our lunch today..yeah, they came over. I had the fish and chip with Isabella and my husband had the steak tips with an order of salad bar. CB's choices of salad bar are one of the best. You get full just eating the salad. I still have 4 hours to go before going home time but right now I feel like taking a nap. Geez!

Free Pancakes at IHOP

Last Tuesday was the national Pancake Day and IHOP celebrated it by giving away pancakes up to 10 pm. It was a talk of the office because we are just a mile away from IHOP. Three people attempted to go after work but because of the waiting time they decided to leave. You get free pancakes as long as you make a donation to support local children’s hospital. Here, I got a print screen of IHOP’s way of thanking everyone who supported the National Pancake Day celebration.

Plantains on Sunday Morning

I love plantains or “platano.” This is the alternative of our saging na saba in the Philippines. I cooked this by frying but my friend boils them like nilagang saging but I never tried that. If the plantain is not very ripe, I put a little sugar before frying but if it’s ripe already, I just put the sugar on the side after cooking. They are similar to our Dole or Chiquita bananas although the skin is thicker. I could make around eight to ten slices in one fruit. We always have them in the house. Like now, my daughter requested some as soon as she woke up. Sometimes, I can buy a bag of green plantains from Costco and I store them inside a brown plastic bag for a week and they will be nice and yellow ready for frying. Do not worry if you see some brown on the skin, the inside is still ok as long as it’s not too soft. We have “platanos” here but I still miss our banana cue that we buy from the tindahan.

$4 Starbuck's Breakfast

Starbucks launched yesterday their new breakfast menu which probably can compete against McDonald’s dollar menu, value meal or breakfast. It is called the Starbucks breakfast pairings at a very affordable price of $3.95. It is available the whole day so you cannot say you miss breakfast anymore. You have two choices for your $4 breakfast: For a tall brewed coffee, you can pair it with the new artisan bacon or ham sandwich or the reduced-fat turkey bacon sandwich or the sausage sandwich. If you get the tall caffe’ latte (12 fl. Oz), you can get it with a reduced-fat cinnamon swirl coffee care or perfect oatmeal.

This recession period, everybody has to diversify to be able to survive it. I gotta taste this new breakfast pairings from Starbucks. The sandwiches sound good plus the coffee. Hmmm….perfect for a late breakfast this Saturday. I have a weekend off.

Yummy Arby's

No time to cook dinner last night so we went to Arby's for a quick eat. This is my favorite - French Dip & Swiss Toasted Sub. It is made of thinly sliced roast beef with melted swiss cheese on a toasted sub. Before biting, dip it in the au jus ......yummy, yummy, yummy.
Their curly fries are our favorite too.

Dinner at Pollo Tropical

If we are in the mood for grilled chicken and ribs, roast pork, red/black beans, yellow rice, yuca, friend plantians, island wraps and other carribean/spanish food we go to Pollo Tropical. We love their grilled chicken and fried plantians. We went their today. I want to share some photos I took.

I usually do the ordering. We always come here so I have mastered what we like to eat but it took us several trial and errors before we know what we really wanted.

This is hubby's all time favorite. Quarter chicken (all white meat), sides of corn and curly fries, gravy and a big order of ceasar salad with no chicken. The bread is included.

This what I always order. Half chicken (all white) and sides of white or yellow rice and black beans. As an additional, we always get a regular order of sweet plantains. This is enough for the three of us - me, hubby and the little girl. If you could still see the bill, I think I paid $20 and change. Not bad, right?

Girl Scout Cookies

I got my girl scout cookies last friday. My favorite is the trefoils - a shortbread cookie. I did not order the samoas this year and the dulce de leche is something new so I tried it. Not really to my liking. It seems that it's too sweet. There were a lot of orders from my job......we just love girl scout cookies.

A Trip To Jollibee Queens, New York

This is the first sight upon approaching the store. OMG, it's PILA!!!!! Not bad we said. We gotta go.. we are here. No turning back! I took this photo while inside the vehicle still looking for a parking spot.

Jollibee is outside the store to greet you. My daughter was scared to give him a hug. She already saw Jollibee in the Philippines two years ago but I don't think she remembered it.

This is inside the store. There are a lot of empty chairs because they are reserved for people who are still at the counter placing their orders...all probably hungry already.

Finally, I got closer to the counter that I was able to take some photos of the menu.

HHmmm...the yumburger. Partly you can see the burger steak. That's what I had. You have a choice between two or three burger steaks.

The miss ko na chicken joy. What was so funny because from the counter you can see how many more minutes left before the chicken gets cook. When it was like 20 seconds left, the customers starts the count down and some crew would start clapping their tongs. Then, in a few seconds the chicken are gone again.

This is what we had for take out. A bucket of chicken joy (6 pcs for $13.39 plus tax) and the rest are leftovers, rice and gravy.

Are we going back there? No, if only to eat but if somebody who is naglilihi or who have not eaten at Jollibee for 10 years or more and does not know how to go to Queens, probably yes to accompany him or her but she pays for the toll which is around $15 (lol). The gas is on me as long as it stays at $1.75.

It is not because i don't like jollibee anymore but to go there is a pain in the A--. It starts with the pila from outside, luckily it took us only around 30 minutes and it was not cold at that time. Some people came all the way from Virginia and Atlantic City just to eat at Jollibee. They traveled almost 5 to 6 hours just to have a taste of the chicken joy. It was around 5pm when we were there and they have to drive back that night too. Whew! I would not do that! There was another pinay, i guess she lives in the city because it seems that she took the subway. She was on the phone while in line. We just heard her saying, " Ang haba ng pila! Pag-umuwi ako, dadalhin ko nalang ang anak mo at araw-araw ko dadalhin sa Jollibee!!!" When she hung up, she told us "alis na ako dito, bahala siya, di ako pipila ng ganito ka haba!" then she left nga!

So we stayed, once you get inside there is another pila at the counter. Ito ang matindi...almost 1 hour na naman! What is taking so long is the chicken joy. Once the chicken are cooked, they are not enough for the orders waiting. They were even asking for orders which does not include chicken to step front so that they don't have to wait but nobody went because everybody wants that chicken joy!

Once you have your food, be prepared for the elbow to elbow sitting arrangement. The store is small to accomodate all the patrons. And, if you have a car, be lucky to get a parking spot on the side streets right away. We parked about 2 blocks away. If you take the subway you are fine. The store is right under the subway. You can see the train above your head from the pila outside.

Overall, I miss Jollibee but I could wait for Philippines or california or maybe when they put up one in Jersey.

For blog purposes, here was our order:

2 pcs burger steak - $4.19
Yum cheese - $1.89
#4 Combo Palabok - $7.49
#3 Combo Spag - $6.29
6 pc. chicken joy bucket - $13.39
#1 2 pcs with 2 sides - $7.19
Regular Soda 20 oz - $1.69
(3) Peach amngo pie - $6.87

Total - $49.00 + $4.10(tax) = $53.10

WEIGHT LOSS ~ Do You Know the Secret ?

Shhh Do you know the secret to weight loss? There are many people who think they do, then they find out they don't. If you have tried to lose weight and didn't get the results you were looking for, you need to read this.

The Secret to Weight Loss is actually three fold:

  1. Body Alkalinity
  2. Your Vision of Yourself and The Law of Attraction
  3. Exercise or Fitness

First lets look at Body Alkalinity, in the last post we talked how the body is electric and made up of frequencies. These energies or frequencies are utilized by every cell, muscle, organ and tissue of the body to function at their best. The more alkaline your body is, the higher your energies will become. This is the first step to weight loss, getting the body to be able to shed its weight. Think of it this way, the more acid your body tissues become the more fat you store to protect yourself from it. That is why eating low fat foods which are high in sugar(acid forming) don't help the weight loss problem. We will discuss this in detail in a later post.

The Second Factor or How You See Yourself is very important for two reasons. First, if you constantly tell yourself you are fat, you don't like your thighs, or that kangaroo pouch is getting out of control. These thoughts are keeping you fat! Have you heard of the Law of Attraction? What you think about, you bring about, this is true for everything you do even weight loss. Secondly, negative emotions carry a lower frequency or vibration. If you constantly use negative words, you will produce lower vibrations and a more acid environment. That will make it harder to lose weight.

Third, the E word, most people can't even say it let alone do it! Yes, exercise is a must. That doesn't mean you have to join a gym although you could if you would like to. Just remember, we are talking increasing frequencies here, think of it this way, Motion creates E-Motion. You will feel better with exercise, and get more oxygen into the system which is the greatest alkalizer in the world! For those of you who can't exercise due to some kind of painful ailment, all you have to do is....Breathe, not just in and out but aerobic breathing. This will increase the heart rate and circulation until the day you can get up and and begin to walk. If you have a health condition consult your physician first before exercise, but most won't tell you not to breathe. For the rest of us, a simple rebounder, or mini trampoline is a good start. But begin slow and work up from 2 min 2x per day to 15 min. 2x per day over a period of a month.

So what will you do with this Secret? Will you apply it to yourself? If not, who do you know who could use this information? Send them this way for more info.

You are free to believe what you choose, and what you do attests to what you believe.

Potato chips In my office we counsel patients on proper eating habits for many reasons. Some patients are wanting weight loss, others more energy, some are experiencing headaches or other ailments.

It is inevitable that I get asked, "is it okay if I eat just a little of this or that food"? I tell them that there are consequences for all of our choices, good or bad. You must start with a goal in mind, then set up the plan to achieve that goal. It doesn't matter how small the goal is, whether you want to alleviate allergies or you want to cure your Irritable bowel disease, you have to eliminate foods that are poisoning your system and replace them with healthier snacks and meals.

"But Doc", I hear, "why can't I have just a few chips or fries, it isn't going to kill me". I reply that "you are right, it is not going to kill you, TODAY anyway". I encourage you to check out this link which may have you think twice before eating any chips, fries or fried potatoes again.

We are living in a society where we are flooding our systems with toxic chemicals in our food, drink(including water) and air. It is no wonder we have the staggering disease processes we have and are considered unhealthy as a nation.

We have to make changes, don't put these chemicals in your body, no matter how "acceptable" the limits.

Want to lose weight fast?
It’s easy to say goodbye to 10 pounds of unwanted fat with these easy nutrition tips. Just pay attention to what you eat and be sure to have good tasting, fresh and healthy food including snacks, fill up on vegetables and keep your taste buds happy with fruit.

Just follow these simple guidelines to lose your first 10 pounds, last 10 pounds or give your weight loss program a boost when it seems to have stuttered to a halt. This is a balanced and flexible plan that you can use for as long as you want.

1. Keep a note of everything that you eat and drink. You do not need to estimate calories. Just write down what it was that you had and the approximate quantity. You will find that being more aware of what you are eating helps you to plan healthy meals and snacks.

2. Halve your intake of all pure or added fats. This means using half as much butter or spread on your bread, toast, muffins and potatoes; half the usual amount of mayonnaise or sauce on your salad; and half the oil in the frypan every time.

3. Limit treats containing sugar to three times per week. This includes chocolate, ice cream, desserts, cake, pastries, cookies, etc.

4. Include a lower fat source of protein at most meals: chicken, fish, beans, cottage cheese, or low fat yogurt. Have eggs, nuts and red meat occasionally but not every day.

5. Plan at least one lunch and dinner every week without meat or cheese. Build those meals around whole grains, vegetables and beans to increase fiber and reduce fat.

6. Reduce the fat content in your milk products. If you are currently drinking whole milk, reduce to 2% fat. From 2% reduce to 1%. Choose lower fat cheese and yogurt. When you buy yogurt, also check that it does not contain sugar.

7. Have at least two servings of fruit every day. This can be for dessert or snacks. Choose fruit that is in season.

8. Drink water instead of sodas, juices, milky drinks or alcohol. Avoid diet soda - the sweet taste only encourages you to crave sugar. Hot water with a slice of lemon can be very refreshing in the morning.

9. Include at least two servings of vegetables at lunch and dinner. If you are getting hungry, have more.

10. Eat slowly. The body is slow to register when you are full and it is easy to eat too much if you are racing through your meals.

11. Grated carrot makes a great snack. You will find that a grated carrot is much more filling than a whole carrot. Strange but true.

12. Use whole grains wherever possible. The fiber will give you a fuller feeling and also help your digestion.

13. Choose food that you can chew. Again this will increase your fiber intake, and the act of chewing will make you feel more satisfied too. This means eating fruit instead of drinking juice. If you have soup, make sure it is chunky.

14. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. Plan your shopping too - make a list of what you need and stick to it. If you just grab something when you are feeling hungry, you will probably choose high calorie food.

15. Eat every 3-4 hours. This helps to boost your metabolism. When you eat less, your body goes into starvation mode and stores more fat. I was shocked to learn that for my weight, height and activity level I have to eat 1800 to 2200 calories per day just to start LOSING weight!
